When I stepped back to
survey the completed image of
The Lion of Judah,
I could hardly believe the work before me. Every element of the painting
spoke to me. The lion - strong and regal, the crown of thorns and a
nail-pierced paw blended with the colors of an apocalyptic sky and a
dove to capture the message of Revelation 5:5 with a symbolism which I
had yet to see in the world of "Christian" art. We so often hear of
Jesus being portrayed as the Lamb of God, which He certainly was, but
Christ had so many facets to His being that He can not be limited to
one. His meekness also carried with its strength and courage. These
characteristics coupled with His royalty were fittingly acknowledged
with a drawing of a lion. Lions have symbolized royalty for many nations
throughout the centuries, but God had already spoken of the lion in
Genesis where Jacob blessed Judah.
I have to be honest and say that in my heart I felt that this painting
would not be widely received because of the drop of blood and the strong
overtones set by the lion and the scroll. I also realized at the same
time that this was the picture that God had created and it would be used
for His purpose in His time.
I had studied art without the benefit of lessons or instructors. The
knowledge I had gained had been on my own with the use of very limited
resources. For approximately eight years, I had struggled with the task
of trying to "make it" in the world of art. It was a challenge which I
was willing to tackle, for being an artist was a dream that I had prayed
for many years would become a reality.
Shortly before I painted
The Lion of Judah,
I had come to a crossroad in my life where I knew that without total
dedication to God, anything that I attempted would be null and void. I
would never become the vessel that the master could fashion from the
life that He had given me. I had been a Christian for many years, but I
had gradually drifted away from my first love. I rededicated my life to
God and gave Him free license with my artwork. "From now on, I will
paint what You want me to paint and give You the glory for it," I told
Him.
The image of The
Lion of Judah
began to take place in my mind, and I began to plan how I could capture
the Scripture with symbolic gestures. Every day I would start out with
my paints and brushes and when I finished my work for the day, I was
always amazed at what had been placed on the canvas. It was as if I had
stepped aside and watched as every stroke took on a different one from
what I had previously planned. I can truthfully say that God directed
me, and I was merely the tool that He used. It was His image and not
mine that I beheld, and I could only give Him the credit for it.
God has blessed me in an incredible way through the painting of the Lion
of Judah. This was the image that launched my career as a Christian
artist. I pray that you will be blessed by the image and that it will
